Rainbow Mountain is a colourful eye-catcher that many would love to see - in fact, it's amongst National Geographic's "100 Places to See Before you Die"! As the trek there can be physically challenging, we're leaving it up to you to decide whether you'd like to go after your group tour of Peru.
Rainbow Mountain, or Vinicunca, was only discovered recently, when snow melted and revealed its unique pattern. The colours come from minerals that have different colours, including turquoise, lavendar and gold. Come see it for yourself on this shared tour!
Day 1 • Cuzco
Get up before dawn for your pick-up - you can catch some sleep on the 3-hour bus journey.
Have breakfast on arrival, before starting your hike to Rainbow Mountain. The hike takes around 1-1.5 hours one way, however some people do struggle with the altitude and their breathing as the air is thinner, so do take your time and drink water.
Upon arriving at the highest point (5,200m), enjoy the spectacular view of the colourful mountain and snap your photos. Optionally, you can visit the Red Mountain, too (costs under US $10 extra). Hike back for around an hour. Tuck into some lunch, before your journey back to Cuzco. You'll arrive back in the afternoon.
Spend an extra night in the group hotel in Cuzco.
Included: Pick-up & transport from the hotel. English guide with first aid training. Simple breakfast & buffet lunch. Entrance to the park. Oxygen tanks for emergencies. Night in single occupancy room in group hotel in Cuzco with breakfast the following day.
What to take: Passport. Trekking shoes. Warm layers - it gets cold & windy. Water (a lot! Hydration is important to adapt to altitude). Small backpack. Toilet paper for the rustic toilets. Sun protection & sunglasses. Waterproof jacket or rain poncho. Coca leaves (to chew, against altitude sickness).
