Miyajima

The sacred island of Japan

Information about Miyajima

From Hiroshima, the efficiency of its rail network will allow you to move around wherever you want and, on the ferry, you can also go to Miyajima, the sacred island of Japan!

It is recommended that you start with a visit to the Itsukushima Shinto temple and its famous floating Torii. If you have a few hours to spare and are feeling fit, you can also climb Mount Misen, which is very popular with the Japanese. There are many activities available on the island of Miyajima to make the most of your visit.

Deer are everywhere on the island! Be careful with your belongings, they will not hesitate to chew on them. You may wonder why deer are so common in Japan. Simply because they are considered sacred animals, messengers of the gods.

Interesting facts about Miyajima

Visit Daisho-in Temple which is one of the most important temples of Shingon Buddhism. It is located at the foot of Mount Misen, where the founder of the sect, Kobo Daishi, began practicing Buddhism on the island of Miyajima.

A pleasant and relaxing way to enjoy Miyajima is to walk along one of the island's many charming hiking trails. One of them leads through the Momijidani (Japanese for 'maple valley'), a great place to see the colour of the maple leaves in autumn.

Very popular in the area, we recommend you try the local oysters from the end of the year until the end of February. They are so popular that Miyajima has a festival dedicated to them, the Miyajima Kaki Matsuri ("Miyajima Oyster Festival") on the second weekend in February.
