Mount Misen is the sacred mountain on Miyajima island and is the highest mountain on the island at 535 meters. It is located within the World Heritage area of Itsukushima Shrine. You can choose to hike up Mount Misen or take the Miyajima ropeway to skip the steepest part of the climb. Once you reach the summit, there are various hiking trails to explore and you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the sea all the way to Hiroshima.Mount Misen is particularly beautiful in the spring when the valley and mountain are covered in pink cherry blossoms, and in the fall when the leaves change to shades of brown, red, orange, and yellow.

Mount Misen is home to a very old forest, considered a natural treasure of Japan. It has long been an important pilgrimage destination. The monk Kobo-Daishi, founder of Shingon Buddhism, visited this place in 806. There are several spiritual sites on the mountain that commemorate the sacred acts performed by Kobo Daishi. Today, these sites are known as the Seven Wonders of Misen. These include the eternal fire at Kiezu-no Reikado (Eternal Fire Hall), which has been burning for over 1,160 years, and Ryu-to-no-sugi (Dragon Fire Cedar), where it is said that visitors can see many lights or even fireballs coming out of the cedar on February evenings. Before starting your hike, treat yourself to a local snack: Momiji! These small sweets are shaped like maple leaves and filled with red bean paste, salted bean paste, sweet potato paste, chestnut paste, chocolate cream paste, custard paste, green tea paste, or many other flavors. The dough is light and fluffy, and the filling has a smooth texture that melts in your mouth!
