What is the language of Nepal?
Nepal is an extremely multicultural country - there are many ethnic groups and each group speaks its own language. The official language of Nepal is Nepali, spoken as a mother tongue by 45% of the population. The other common languages, spoken by 5% or more of the population, are Maithili (11.6%), Bhojpuri (5.98%), Tharu (5.77%) and Tamang (5.11%).
However, there are still many others spoken throughout the country. This being said, Nepali is the officially recognized language, taught in schools and used by the government. Before the government adopted Nepali about 60 years ago, most areas spoke their own language.
